Weight Control Program's HCG Injection: Does it hurt?

Our Weight Control Program provides the choice of either hCG oral sublingual drops or injections. I, and most of our patients, prefer the injections over the drops. When asked if the injections hurt, my reply is "if you feel anything at all, it will not hurt more than a mosquito bite" and there are no residual effects unlike that of a mosquito bite.
The original hCG Manuscript, "Pounds & Inches: A NEW APPROACH TO OBESITY", by Dr. Simeons states this about the injection..."We use very fine needles that are two inches long and inject deep intragluteally in the outer upper quadrant of the buttocks." Yikes. That sounds painful and scary. Rest assured the injection protocol has changed. Over the past years many doctors have seen that using a smaller needle, and a smaller amount of medication can be painlessly and effectively injected into our fatty tissue; usually without bleeding or bruising. Sometimes patients will tell me that they felt a slight sting at the injection site during the injection. This is usually caused by the alcohol that was swabbed to prepare the site for injection. The hCG will begin to work on the 3rd day of the program so you will not feel any direct effects of the hCG on day 1 or 2.
Most patients prefer the convenience of the once-daily injections over the twice-daily oral drops. The injections and drops must be refrigerated. The drops have to be taken 30 minutes before or after eating, drinking or brushing your teeth and need to stay under the tongue for 5-10 minutes.
